Overview
Working within the Disability Resource Center, Accessibility Consultants (Accessibility Services Specialists) work with students, faculty, and staff to ensure that the university is accessible to individuals with disabilities. Using a combination of counseling skills, knowledge of disabilities, and an understanding of applicable laws, consultants guide students and faculty through an interactive process to determine appropriate accommodations.


Responsibilities
  • Work with disabled USU students to identify barriers to full participation in the curricular and co-curricular environments and determine appropriate reasonable accommodations, based on Section 504, ADA, and best practices, to provide equal access.
  • Interpret comprehensive psycho-educational evaluations and medical documentation presented by students to assess students' needs and determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations in accordance with federal law.
  • Coach and support individual students with disabilities as needed to facilitate the development of self-advocacy skills, effective time management, and learning strategies.
  • Counsel students regarding academics, career development, disability adjustment, and crisis intervention.
  • Conduct workshops, presentations, and trainings to the campus community regarding students with disabilities and equal access.
  • Maintain appropriate records of accommodations made and communication with and regarding students.
  • Monitor and address access issues in the physical and social environments at USU.
  • Assist with outreach and transition services provided by the DRC.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling/Disability Studies, Higher Education, Social work, Psychology, or related field; or a Bachelor's degree and two years of directly related experience providing accommodations in a post-secondary environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative, problem-solve, organize workflow, and respond effectively in a timely manner in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and ability to work effectively with diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of and experience applying the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Fair Housing Act in a post-secondary setting.
  • Previous post-secondary experience.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology.
  • Experience writing case notes.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  1. Ability to interact with students in a welcoming and professional way.
  2. Strong organizational, time management, and case management skills.
  3. Ability to use active listening, open-ended probing, clarifying, and other basic counseling skills.
  4. Ability to interpret disability law, including but not limited to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  5. Ability to work effectively with various stakeholders and diverse populations.
  6. Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  7. Ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with professionalism.
  8. Ability to use spreadsheets, databases, and other technology to accomplish job duties.
  9. Ability to provide accurate and appropriate training to the campus community.
